teddy boy Talk Making Work Part of What Makes Life WorthwhileTED Talk Making Work Part of What Makes Life Worthwhile1We often focus on work as being a means to an end- we work to have the money and benefits to care for a family and enjoy what time we have left over. With this perspective, many people feel they are always chasing the career that will one day make them happy or where they will find their passion. But, what if what makes life worthwhile is really right in front of yur face? What if all it takes is to change your perspective of work? It truly might be that simple. In a TED talk delivered by Chip Conley, he examines the many ways in which our perspective on happiness and well-being is clouded by our societal patterns. Rather than focusing on the true needs of ourselves as humans, we focus on outward wants. We also like to focus and count tangible things rather than relishing in the intangibles that make all the difference. So, how does this relate to work? In so many waysA s professionals, we focus on the tasks that we are doing to get to the end product. What we miss are the immeasurable outcomes of the simple tasks we do on a daily basis. Sure, these tasks might not be fulfilling or feel meaningful, but the experiences they create for us is where we find happiness. Rather than chasing after the elusive things we want in life, all we have to do is change our perspective to see that we already have them. All we need to do is create the conditions and environment where they can be experienced. Here are a few ways to make work part of what makes life worthwhile and interestingThink about the positive impact you are having on others.Consider the relationships with your coworkers.Ponderthe positive impacts your career has on your family.Count the experiences youve had that you wouldnt if you werent in your field.Get invested in your companys mission and make an impact.Focus on experiences and connections rather than the next dollar.Consider the wayflexible work helps you make meaningful memories for yourself and others.Explore flexible work options hereChanging your perspective can help create a new and improved environment where happiness can grow and thrive. How seasonal shifts impacts productivity (and how to cope)

How seasonal shifts impacts productivity (and how to cope) How seasonal shifts impacts productivity (and how to cope) While seasonal affective disorder is commonly discussed when the temperature drops below freezing, any shift in weather can cause you to feel off kilter. Especially when you transition from the relaxing, low key days of summer to the year-end planning meetings of autumn, you may struggle to find your rhythm. Career expert and author Caroline Vazzana says much like school children returning to the classroom, the ‘back to work’ attitude is in full force in September.“It seems that all of the big projects pick back up in the fall and workload increases. This can result in a employees feeling overwhelmed and overworked,” she explains. To help you meet deadlines, reap a solid performance review and finish the quarter strong, here, experts give their best advice on how to remain productive:Recognize that this is not a mythMuch like anything that puts a wrench in your routine, chief engagement and brand officer at EHE Joy Altimare says acceptance is the first step to pushing forward . Or in other words: understand that what you might be feeling is completely normal. And it’s backed by medicine. “Scientists know there are a lot of biological and physiological reasons our moods tend to change with the season, but one of the biggest factors in seasonal mood swings is light,” she explains. The scientific evidence determines the amount of daily vitamin D is the main seasonal variable that affects mood, according to the US National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health. How does this work? It’s all internal: “Our body’s circadian clock monitors the day length and tells us when to feel sleepy and when to wake up. It regulates other systems in our body, like hormone release, temperature regulation, metabolism, and mood,” she continues. “So when there’s less light during the day, some of those processes affected by the circadian clock, including ones that influence our mood, get disrupted. Therefore, when you feel a bit more sluggish during t he fall and winter months, acknowledge that it is normal, seasonal effects.”Make a listWhen you’re still paying off that credit card bill from the beach vacation you took, packing up your swimsuits and battling allergies from foliage, remembering to return emails, prepare for meetings and other work tasks might fall to the wayside. Everyone has moments of feeling scattered-brained, but Vazzana says one way to collect your cognitive willpower is to make a list. The very act of ‘checking off’ an item- physically or digitally- will have you feel accomplished and empowered to tackle another one ASAP.Adopt a balanced lifestyleTo live a long life - and thus have a robust career - Altimare says it’s important to pay attention to how you eat, think and move every single day. She believes the connection between these three dynamics ensures your happiness and your ability to perform to your best ability in (and out of) the office. “Get up and move every day. Daily movement, espe cially, during the fall/winter months, can be a big mood enhancer and positively impact stress,” she continues. And with your diet? Altimare says it might be easy to eat comfort foods when it’s cool, try to balance the simple carbs, sugar-filled foods with fruits, veggies, proteins and complex-carbs and lots of water. “You’ll feel more energetic and the brain power you need to make good decisions at work and at home,” she adds.Set goals - and celebrateWhile you should set goals for yourself every quarter according to Vazzana, if you’re failing at focusing, there’s no better time to consider the future instead of getting lost in the present. Once you’ve determined where you hope to be by the time the first frost hits, you can decide how you’ll reward yourself for meeting your benchmarkers.“If you do meet your goals, reward yourself with a new product you’ve been eyeing or a fun night out. It’s important to always celebrate and acknowledge your accomplishments, ” she explains.Spend time with friendsTrue story: a belly laugh with your best friend can solve anything. Or a fulfilling date night with your partner. Altimare says when you’re struggling to focus at work, make sure your time out of the office eases your nerves and angst.“Work out with your girlfriends, sign-up for a language class with a pal, or invite friends over to have a healthy potluck,” she explains. “I’ve found feeling like a belong and having a tribe I’m connected to with activities planned helps me stay productive, personally and professionally!”

Help Wanted Federal Contract Specialists!

Help Wanted Federal Contract Specialists! Help Wanted Federal Contract Specialists! Help Wanted: Federal Contract Specialists! Help Wanted: Federal Contract Specialists! by Sandra L. Keppley Peter R. Orszag, head of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) says that Federal civilian agencies should grow their acquisition workforce by at least 5% over the next 5 years. Last year, these agencies awarded and managed an estimated $138 billion in civilian contracts, according to the Federal Acquisition Institute. Knowing this, would you like to change your job series from Administrative, Program Analyst, IT, or other job series and move into the Business and Industry Career Series? Would you like new challenges, training, customers, projects, and opportunities for growth? Why not consider analyzing the 1101 and 1102 job series? If you are interested, then its time to add contracting, life cycle management and acquisitions into your Federal Career Toolkit. First you will need to study the Qualifications, Education and Specialized Experience in order to build your federal resume or KSAs toward Contracts and Acquisitions work. Sandra Lee Keppley, retired Human Resources Specialist and Director, Labor Employee Relations at Department of Labor joins Kathryn Troutman to answer Frequently Asked Questions by current federal employees about applying to the Contract Specialist job series. Educational Requirements What are the basic educational requirements: To qualify for positions at grades GS-5 through GS-12 in the 1101 or 1102 job series, you must possess either a bachelors degree OR have completed at least 24 semester hours of coursework in certain business-related fields. In order to qualify for positions at grades GS-13 and above, you must possess a bachelors degree AND at least 24 semester hours of coursework in certain business-related fields. The 24 hours may be included in, or in addition to, coursework taken to complete the degree program. Does the phrase a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelors degree mean I must have a degree, or just that I must be enrolled in a degree program? The phrase means you must possess a bachelors degree conferred or approved by an accredited U.S. college or university based on a 4-year course of study. Simply being enrolled and working toward a degree does not meet the qualification standard. Furthermore, honorary degrees or other degrees with no basis in coursework do not satisfy the standard. Does the degree have to be a business degree? No. A qualifying bachelors degree may be in any field of study and may be of any type, such as Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Business Administration. The 24 semester hours, however, must be in some combination of the eleven fields listed in the standard. When the degree AND 24-hour coursework requirements must be met for GS-13 and above positions, can I count courses taken as part of my degree program to satisfy the 24-hour requirement? Yes, coursework could simultaneously count for the degree requirement and the 24-hour requirement. For example, if you earned a business degree, you should have completed sufficient credits in the required fields to satisfy the 24-hour requirement. However, if your degree is in another field, such as sociology, you might need to take some additional courses in the fields identified in the qualification standard to complete the 24-hour requirement. Grandfathering The Exception Provisions I am currently working as an 1102 in a civilian agency. Am I grandfathered for civilian agency positions based on having a certain number of years of experience (meaning the requirements do not apply to me)? The 1102 qualification standard does have some grandfathering features for the existing workforce, although none of those features are tied to a prescribed number of years of experience. Every 1102, regardless of grade, is considered to meet the standard for the position and grade held as of January 1, 2000, and is qualified for positions in other civilian agencies at the same grade without having to meet the educational and training requirements. In addition, an 1102 can be promoted through grade GS-12 without meeting the qualification requirements. There is no grandfathering provision that allows experience to substitute for education in order to qualify for promotions to GS-13 and above. Do existing Federal employees in other series, such as GS-1105, have to meet the educational requirements to move into the 1102 field? Yes. The 1102 standard applies to every civilian agency 1102 position and must be met by individuals entering the series from outside the Government, or from other series within the Government. If you are a current 1105, you must meet the educational requirements to lateral or promote into the 1102 series. What does this phrase mean: Employees who occupy GS-1102 positions at grades 5 through 12 will be considered to meet the basic requirements for other GS-1102 positions up to and including those classified at GS-12? This statement is found in the exceptions paragraph for GS-5 through GS-12. Simply stated, it exempts employees hired by January 1, 2000 from the educational requirements for any position up to GS-12. If you meet neither the degree nor 24-hour requirement, you can still be promoted through GS-12. All individuals hired since January 1, 1998 should meet the educational requirements since they were hired under the former standard. However, many 1102s hired before January 1, 1998 do not have the education now required, and the exception accommodates those employees. Additionally, in the event someone was inadvertently hired into the 1102 series between January 1998 and January 2000 who did not actually meet the former standard, that employee would be covered by the exception. Education Waivers Can the qualification requirements for positions in grades GS-5 through GS-12 be waived? No. All new entrants into the GS-1102 career field at grades 5 through 12 must meet the qualification requirements. The requirements cannot be waived. However, if you are already an 1102 below grade GS-12 as of January 1, 2000, the exception language of the standard allows you to be promoted through GS-12 even if you do not have the education specified by the standard. Do I need a waiver for any promotions up to GS-12? No. A waiver is not necessary for promotions under grade GS-13 because all promotion candidates would either meet the standard or qualify for the exception at those lower grades. Waivers only exist for the requirements that apply to positions at GS-13 and above. I do not meet the educational requirements for a position at GS-13 and above. Do I have to obtain a waiver to apply for a job? No. The senior procurement executive of the hiring agency must grant a waiver only if the agency wants to select you to fill a position. If the vacancy announcement indicates that waivers may be granted, you can apply for the position. The human resource office will forward your application for review, along with the other applications, with a note that one or more applicants may need a waiver. At the agencys option, the waiver may be applied to any of the educational, training, or experience requirements, or combination thereof, as specified in the vacancy announcement. Can I get a waiver and carry it with me every time I apply for a job? No. A waiver is the prerogative of the hiring agency and would be granted based on the unique circumstances of a hiring action. Blanket waivers do not exist. If I receive a waiver for a GS-13 position, do I need a new waiver for a GS-14 promotion, even if it is in the same agency? Yes. Waivers are specific to a selection action, so any selection for a future promotion would require another waiver if you still did not meet the qualification requirements. As the government grows its acquisition workforce, more career opportunities will become available, and you should consider whether a move to the 1101 or 1102 job series is right for you. If so, now is the time to work on building a resume with the right education, qualifications, and specialized experience. I hope this FAQ helps you think it out! Survey says the best U.S. cities to job search in are sunny and warm

Survey says the best U.S. cities to job search in are sunny and warm Survey says the best U.S. cities to job search in are sunny and warm Indeed released a list of the best US cities for job seekers today, and the winner is a surprise. How about Miami, Florida? That’s good news for people sick of hearing how they have to move somewhere with terrible weather to get a better job. But how did Miami come out ahead?Indeed ranked 25 cities based on four questions about: how well the labor market serves people looking for jobs,  â€œthe average salary, once adjusted for cost of living,” how employers are rated in terms of work-life balance on the company’s review database, and  how employers are rated in terms of ” job security and advancement opportunities” on the company’s review database.Indeed studied information on “the 50 metro areas with the most postings” on the site, then came up with percentile scores for each topic, and later combined the results into an Indeed City Score for each location. The company pointed out that “job seeker favorability reflects the degree of ‘mismatch’ - where the ratio o f job postings from employers to clicks from candidates is in favor of the latter.”So if you’re currently on the hunt for a new position, consider taking a look at  Indeed’s new list, coupled with a  recent study shedding light on the best and worst US cities for equal pay.The Sun Belt rises againOther than Miami at number one (with an Indeed City Score of 89.2),  Orlando, FL came in second (85.5), Raleigh, NC came in third (84.5), Austin, TX came in fourth (82.1), and Sacramento, California came in fifth (81.8%).The press release highlighted the prevalence of  of cities in the Sun Belt region, which is not surprising considering that  census data  shows sunnier places are increasingly the best ones to work in now.Although Brookings said  in a December 2016  analysis of annual Census Bureau data that “California’s migration trends are a notable Sun Belt exception,” it later added that “overall, the United States seems to be in the midst of a population growth paradox: As the nation’s population growth continues to stagnate due to fertility declines in the context of an aging population, internal population shifts help places like the Sun Belt continue to grow.”The Midwest fallsThe  rankings  of the final five cities also show some warm-weather favorites:  Providence, RI came in at #21 (with an Indeed City Score of 56.6), Virginia Beach, VA at #22 (52.7), Phoenix, AZ at #23 (51.8), Dallas, TX at #24 (51.8), and Richmond, VA at #25 (50.5).The cities that have long relied on manufacturing, however, didn’t make the list at all.But Chicago, New York, and “cities from the manufacturing-heavy Midwest” didn’t make the cut, which the press release says is in accordance with census data displaying that people are “staying away” from once-popular destinations. As Indeed Senior VP Paul D’Arcy talked about the decrease in manufacturing positions in a statement.“Manufacturing jobs have steadily declined over the years and haven’t shown pro mise for career growth like a generation ago.” As a result, the states where they used to be concentrated “are working to diversify their economy to attract workers and keep talent in their state,” D’Arcy said.Another outlet  highlighted just how many of these jobs were lost.According to an August 2015 Issue Brief from the Economic Policy Institute called “Manufacturing Job Loss: Trade, Not Productivity, Is the Culprit,”  the US lost 5 million manufacturing jobs between January 2000 and December 2014.Related: The three best US cities for equal payIf you want to live in a city good for job-hunting and is good for equal pay, the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area seems to be the best choice.A recent study by apartment search service ABODO displayed  the  â€œcities and jobs with the greatest gaps in pay” in the US,  with all rankings classified in terms of “cents women earn to a man’s dollar.” The company looked at  2015 U.S. Census Bureau salary information on full-t ime workers.Durham-Chapel Hill, NC came out on top with 92.6,  Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA was second with 89.5, and  Fresno, CA was third, with 88.8.It seems like the key to finding a good job is living in the right place - which is an excellent argument for getting ready to move.

Corporate Culture and How Its Impacted by Leadership Styles

Corporate Culture and How It's Impacted by Leadership Styles Corporate Culture and How It's Impacted by Leadership Styles Corporate Culture and How It's Impacted by Leadership Styles Knowing what type of leadership style works best for you can be key to finding the right company. [TWEET] Workplace culture. Two words used a great deal these days in talking about business, but what does that really mean? Almost every site dedicated to jobseekers and business leadership talks about climate, about finding candidates who are a fit, but where does the culture start and how is it impacted by leadership styles? There's a lot of discussion about how the increase in remote work opportunities, as well as the influx of millennials, is changing the workplace dynamic. Of course, with so many people out of work, feeling comfortable within your office environment may seem like a luxury. However, it's critical to understanding why some interviews go better than others and also to appreciating the unspoken piece of who gets the job. Consider the following case of two managers. We will call these leaders B and R for our purposes. B Leaders B operates on a top-down philosophy. B is in charge and everyone must go through the hierarchy to get things done. Everything is efficient; time isn't wasted on brainstorming because B drives ideas and those ideas are filtered down through each level of management according to role. Many of B's staff likes working in this environment; they can focus on their roles and know that the rest is being managed. Unfortunately, some employees feel demeaned and devalued by this structure, because those starting out have to move through the ranks before truly being invited to contribute. R Leaders On the other hand, R will not make decisions without presenting them to the team first. R also holds daily conversations about everything. This is frequently done through email and R sends a lot of feedback surveys to gather responses before making choices that affect the whole office. Just as with B, many of R's employees enjoy this leadership style. They feel that they play a role in the company's success and they're motivated to go to work every day. On the other hand, some staff feel that they don't care to check email on Saturdays to answer short surveys, and they just want direction. Assuming that everything else was the same and you were offered equitable positions with both B and R's companies, which would your choose? Is one leader a bad leader? That's up for debate. While some may prefer B's style of clear direction and the feeling that everyone works to reach the top, others like to be engaged from day one in driving organizational vision. This exemplar is not only a clear indicator of preference when choosing a position, but it also serves to illustrate the impact a leader has on culture. Those working with B come in to the company and understand that work is rewarded through promotions, but that ideas and input are valued based on loyalty and previous evidence of results. Those who work for R are clearly aware that they are expected to contribute from the moment they are hired, but at the same time, the work-life balance will be different because R has established a workplace culture that is fluid and accessible at all times. When searching for work, you may be asked what you value in a leader and this is a great way for organizations to understand leadership style as well as preferences. However, this can also be turned on its head and you now have an opportunity to determine the company's culture based on what they declare the key traits of a leader are. Organizations rise and fall based on the vision at the top, but employees at all levels can help with that direction by ensuring that the climate is one that suits their personal style and goals as well.

Everything I know I learned on the first day of school

Everything I know I learned on the first day of school Everything I know I learned on the first day of school When life becomes unfamiliar, that’s when we grow the most. As I recall, few days in my life were more foreign than the first day of school. Specifically, first grade.Way back in September 1990, everything was new. My clean, white sneakers that had yet to touch the playground dirt; a Trapper Keeper stocked with unmarked loose-leaf paper; a classroom of strange-looking seven-year-olds just as nervous as I was.Millions of kids feel the same butterflies that come with change. In hindsight, the first day of school - no matter the grade - offers the building blocks for successful adulthood. With a nod to Robert Fulghum’s classic bestseller “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” this is what we learn on day one.Look in the mirror before walking outsideA lifetime of checking our appearance begins on the first day of first grade. From then on, we make sure to give at least half a glance in the mirror before we head out for the day. Hair? Check.  Wrinkle-free shirt?  Check. Million-dollar smile? Double-check.Thanks, first grade.Learn to let go and be on our ownWe tip-toe into the first day of school clutching our parent’s hand but must ultimately say good-bye and  face the challenge alone. From an early age, we understand that, while a support system matters, we have to first rely on ourselves.“Hi, my name is _____. What’s yours?”The same  networking strategy for an after-work happy hour  matters in elementary school too. In a room where you don’t know a soul, the best ice breaker has always been a simple, genuine introduction.A lifetime of recessWe spend hours cooped up at our desks and need time each day to run around and  get the blood flowing. Wait, are we talking about the playground at school or gym after work? Exactly.Assurance of a hand-written noteOn the first day of school, nothing calms the nerves like a  hand-written note from mom tucked inside our lunchbox. A quick “You’re doing great. I love you!” is a giant exhale that reminds us everything will be OK. Sometimes (all the time) grown-ups need confidence boosters too.Life at the sound of the bell‘BEEEEEEP!’ First grade officially begins with the inaugural chime of the school bell. As adults, we don’t need a school bell to stay on track because that familiar blare is forever etched into our brains. It’s like time management before we even knew the meaning of the phrase. Now and then, we have to wait our turnIf our class ventures out of the room, we walk in a single-file line. When we answer the teacher’s math problem, we raise our hand and wait to be called. As adults, we then find ourselves (begrudgingly)in line at the DMV  and holding our hand high during a speaker’s Q A. Where did we learn to be so patient? The first day of school.Early education in mass transitWhen the first day comes to an end, we’re ushered into the parking lot to find our designated  bright yellow cheese-wagon. At that moment, we have one mission: get on th e right bus. Later in life, we obey the same rules as we navigate complex bus routes and elaborate subway systems. Finally home after a long day, there’s nothing better than kicking off our shoes and settling into the couch with something cold to drink. The same goes for being an adult. This article was originally published on DannyRubin.com.

The Ultimate Guide to Writing a Perfect Cover Letter

The Ultimate Guide to Writing a Perfect Cover Letter The Ultimate Guide to Writing a Perfect Cover Letter In the job search process, your cover letter is as important as your resume as it tells the recruiter a lot about your personality and professional qualities. Given a standard cover letter should be no more than a page long, youve got a relatively limited space to convince the hiring person to call you up for an interview. Thats why you must do it effectively. In about 500 words, you must grab the recruiter’s attention, tell them why you want the job and convince them you’re the best candidate out of all the others. Seems like a fairly tough task! But, when written good, your cover letter can become your instant ticket to your dream job. Here’s some useful advice that will get you a perfectly written cover letter. How to write a perfect cover letter? First things first Start with identifying your strengths and weaknesses. Do something like the SWOT analysis of yourself, only for the purpose of your cover letter you won’t need the opportunities  and threats part. In your cover letter, you should highlight your strengths and carefully work with your weaknesses. Of course, you might not possess all the skills your dream position requires  but don’t worry. You can always express your eagerness to learn this or that skill. You can emphasize how quick a learner you are or try and offer an alternative skill you have that the company might benefit from.   When it comes to your strengths, the general rule is: Don’t boast but never underestimate yourself. Also, it goes without saying that you should always make a thorough research about the position and the company. In a nutshell, your cover letter should sound like this particular job is the only job you want. Nothing makes a worse impression than a cover letter screaming out indifference.   Introduction You’ll need to start with an obligatory salutation. “Dear sir or madam” if you don’t know their names, “Dear Mr. Woods / Dear Ms. Woods if you do but you’re applying for a job that requires a traditional way of addressing the reader, or “Hi Peter / Hi Molly”, if you feel like it’s appropriate to get more casual. The introduction is your chance to grab the reader’s attention and make them read on. Only really catchy and creative first two or three sentences will make the recruiter think: “I want to know more about this person!”, or “I want this guy on my team!”   You wonder how to do that? Show love and passion. Love for the brand/company and passion for the job position. A little flattery won’t do any harm, either. If it’s a large, famous company, tell them youve always wanted to work for them. If its a smaller, less known one, let them know you want the job because they’re awesome at what they’re doing and you want to contribute to their future success. Body Each introduction needs a little story as a kickoff but our advice for the main body of text is: Get straight to the point. Don’t bore the reader to death by descriptions of your personality. Don’t get too lyrical, either. You’re not writing a novel. Surely youve already figured out what knowledge and skills make you special. Now’s the time to bring them out! Once again, you should carefully review the job description and decide on which of the skills they require you’re excellent at. These should come first. However, you might find out you lack a certain skill or experience crucial for the position. Don’t panic! The key is to highlight your transferable skills. These are the skills that you didn’t obtain via previous work experience, but having them makes you competent for the job, like organizational, analytical or communication skills. Remember that sometimes  experience is not everything. If you believe you can do it, you can surely convince the recruiter as well! Regarding your writing style, keep in mind the three letters: SEO. No, we don’t mean the search engine optimization. The cover letter SEO stands for Statement, Evidence, Outcome. In short, each of your statements about your skills should be followed by a piece of evidence, together with an outcome for the company you’re addressing. It simply won’t do if you say   “My rhetorical skills are great.” Can you prove it? You should rather say something like: “I am a fairly good public speaker. I expanded my rhetorical skills during my internship at XYZ, where I pitched my ideas in front of my colleagues on a regular basis.” And, even if your rhetorical skills truly are great and you gave evidence to prove it, you should always add what sort of benefit it brings the company in question. So, you can round the original statement off by something like: “I believe my confidence in speaking and presenting ideas would make me a perfect sales representative in your company.” Conclusion By the end of your cover letter, you should give off the impression of a naturally self-confident and a good-to-go type of person. You don’t have to be perfect. Emphasize that youre eager to learn new things and that you think you’ll be a great contribution to the team. It’s good to finish your cover letter off with statements indicating hope for your future cooperation. For instance: “I’m looking forward to meeting you in person”, or “I hope I’ll get the chance to show you more of my abilities once I join your team.” Or you can even be bolder (if you see fit) and say something like: “I believe I’m the missing link of your team.” Of course, these are just general guidelines. You should try and go for something more off-the-wall. After all, you want to stand out from all the other candidates! Finally, always keep in mind these two golden rules of writing a cover letter: Be honest (don’t lie) and proofread your cover letter several times before sending it! Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!

my employer gives terrible resume advice to low-income people

my employer gives terrible resume advice to low-income people my employer gives terrible resume advice to low-income people A reader writes: I intern at a nonprofit organization that assists low-income community members with resumes. My supervisors provide us with very limited autonomy during the resume development process, and each resume we build must follow the style guidelines of our organization. We are required to have all resumes checked at least twice by a supervisor prior to submission, and we are disciplined if we do not make the changes recommended by management. I dont pretend to be a resume expertIm still finishing up my BAbut some of the edits my boss asks me to make do not seem in the clients best interest. For instance, my supervisor requires that every bullet point answers how the task was completed. This makes sense in certain instances (tracked expenses using Microsoft Excel, communicated with security guard via two-way radio), but my boss takes this principle a bit too far. When a client was employed as a janitor, my supervisor wouldnt approve the bullet point cleaned toilets and mopped bathroom floors. She expected that the client write cleaned toilets using toilet brush and Chlorox, mopping floor with industrial sized bucket There is no such thing as unloaded new merchandise on shelves. This should become unloaded new merchandise on shelves using upper body strength according to our management. On a similar note, Ive gotten in trouble for not including a why statement in every bullet point. When I wrote supervised preschool students on playground, my boss asked me to add a rationale (to ensure children remain safe). What exactly does this clarify? I find myself wondering if its really necessary to take counted change and add to ensure the customer received the correct amount of money. Isnt this a given? My boss is also very rigid about including at least three bullet points for each position description. I once had a client with an occupational license and asked why it wasnt included on her resume. She responded, I had it on there, but {boss} told me I needed to add more bullet points to the job I held back in 2008 so I deleted it. Is the three bullet points rule so important that its worth leaving off training/certificates directly relevant to the opening? Each appointment in our office is only an hour long, and if we cant complete a resume during one session, then the client may need to wait several weeks to get additional resume assistance. By that point, its likely the job has been filled. So many clients are losing out on opportunities because my boss wont give me the final go-ahead to submit the resumes. When I share my concerns with management, they assure me these rules are in place so our clients can stand out from other applicants who spent less time refining their resumes. What is your take on my supervisors philosophy? How on earth can I help them consider the opinion of a lowly intern? Your boss sucks and your organization sucks. The rules that your organization is making you follow for resumes are ridiculous. Theyre not strengthening peoples resumes in the way theyre being applied, and their rigidity shows  their  total lack of understanding of what actually makes a good resume. But its not just kind of weak advice its actually actively harming people.  Lines like unloaded new merchandise on shelves using upper body strength are going to result in eye rolls from hiring managers. Its going to move these applicants to the bottom of the pile, by making them look naive and a little silly. Removing occupational licences to create more room for this kind of BS is going to result in people being rejected for not being qualified. And the whole thing is creating a huge opportunity cost as well, by not giving them resume advice that would actually help. Hearing that theyre doing this to low-income people who are searching for help makes me want to cry. Its professional malpractice, and in this particular context its particularly screwed up. Can you drop this internship and get out of there? You have the good sense to see that what theyre doing is awful. Dont stay if you have options. (And can you let me write to whoever oversees this work and point out what theyre doing to clients? Id seriously like to.)
